Marvelous

Montefrío

Moorish heritage, stunning views

Montefrío, a picturesque whitewashed village with Moorish heritage, is just 15 minutes drive away. It is located in the rolling hills of the province of Granada, Andalusia. Recently it was considered by National Geographic as one of the ten villages with the best views in the world. It boasts one of the world's most magnificent domed churches, cave houses, and a richly adorned convent. And of course, as elsewhere in Andalusia, the Moors have left their mark: Montefrío's name in Arab is Montefrid. As a frontier fortress in the 15th century during the reign of the Moors, Montefrió was of strategic importance.

What to do in Montefrío

Near the village, which has retained much of its Moorish character, there is a vast archaeological site known as Las Peñas de los Gitanos, famous for its prehistoric tombs and remains of Roman and Visigoth settlements. Given the importance in history, it is almost obligatory to visit Montefrío's Church of the Incarnation, the Monastery San Antonio, and it's fort, converted into a church by the Catholic kings. From there, at the highest point of the village, you enjoy the magnificent views of the town and its surroundings. Above all, the mountain village is a perfect base for excursions. There are magnificent hiking trails and rock climbing possibilities all around.

Modern facilities and treats

As much as it is rooted in history and in the timeless agrarian lifestyle typical of the region, Montefrío is also a working town with its feet firmly in the present. It has a wide selection of shops, bars, restaurants, banks, modern sports facilities (e.g., tennis, golf) and a thriving, close-knit community that warmly welcomes visitors. And don't forget the fabulous virgen olive oil from this area, plus it's famous cheese and sausages. Montefrío is known for these treats. Montefrío basically offers you the best of many worlds; the tranquility of the Andalusian countryside, the mountains, plus fantastic food and culture at easy reach.

Magical Granada

A must on your list

The city of Granada with the Alhambra and the Albaicin District is a must on your list when staying at Cortijo Bujio. Granada is at only a 45 minutes drive. A vibrant Spanish university city, Granada has all the trimmings of modern life and is home to the greatest Muslim legacy in Europe; indeed, during the years of the Moorish occupation, it was considered to be the jewel of the peninsula. It has one of the most inspiring attractions on the continent, the 11th century Alhambra palace, and has fostered a local Gitano saying: "Please give something to the poor blind beggar, for there can be nothing more cruel than to be blind in Granada”.

The Alhambra

Created originally for military purposes, the Alhambra was an 'alcazaba' (fortress), an 'alcázar' (palace) and a small 'medina' (city), all in one. This triple character helps to explain many distinctive features of the monument. The name Alhambra comes from an Arabic root which means 'red or crimson castle'; perhaps due to the hue of the towers and walls that surround the entire hill of 'La Sabica', which by sunlight is transformed into gold.

Tapas, tea, and flamenco

Those with an intimate knowledge of the Alhambra might well say that it is unrivaled in its appeal, and visitors to the region should make a point of experiencing this spectacular relic of a bygone age. Next to its famous sites, the city of Granada is lovely to wander around, to venture into the Albaicin for drinks and tapas, maybe buy silk or spices, or take tea in one of the many Arab tea shops.

Ancient woodlands, olive groves, and lagoons

For those interested in Andalusian history and culture, there is more than historic Granada and nearby Cordoba to explore in the area, for many old tracks lead to fascinating prehistoric Dolmens and Roman ruins. There is much to be explore: paths trodden for hundreds of years traverse ancient Spanish woodlands and olive groves, some leading to a lagoon where many a tired walker has cooled off on a hot summer’s day. Wildlife enthusiasts also do not have far to go, for amongst the rich bird life, they may on occasion be graced with the sight of Spain’s Royal Eagle soaring above the Cortijo, or can watch the path of migratory birds.

Located in the Andalusian countryside, the area around Cortijo Bujio is ideal for walking, hiking, mountain biking and picnicking. Walks from Cortijo Bujio range from hour-long to daylong excursions. During the summer months, no specialist equipment is required, merely sensible trainers, light clothing and plenty of fluids.
